Greater Europe Mission
Purpose Statement:
Mission: Disciple all peoples of Europe through rapidly reproducing churches.
Vision: God expanding His Kingdom through all peoples of Europe to the world
Description:
Greater Europe Mission helps people in Europe find faith in Jesus Christ and grow in that faith. We do this by sharing our lives with people and helping them discover the message of the Bible for themselves through Bible study groups, church meetings, street theater, puppetry, sports, music, teaching and more. We reach out to orphans and AIDS patients. We send teams to help construct and repair buildings. We help people study the Bible through Distance Learning in many countries. We seek to come alongside the people and churches in Europe who are following Christ and participate in their efforts to reach the continent for Christ.
Most people in Europe have a vague acquaintance with Christianity, but no personal faith in Jesus Christ. How exciting it is to tell them how Jesus can be their friend, today and forever.
And when God uses you to touch others for Christ, He touches your own life as well. It is satisfying to be the person who brings God into another person’s life because by doing so, you become the instrument God uses to change that person’s destiny for eternity.
We offer many opportunities for service. Some Europeans are lonely, others are exuberant; but all who are without Jesus Christ have a God-shaped void in their lives that only He can fill.
Could God use you to show someone how that void can be filled?
Regions Served:
Europe
More than 750 million people live in Europe, and in most countries less than two percent follow Jesus Christ. Because most Europeans’ experience with Christianity has been that of the institutionalized Church, many reject Jesus without understanding that He wants to have a relationship with them. Yet they are searching for meaning and are open to spiritual issues and discussions.
Frank O’Sullivan, a church leader in Ireland, states, “If together we can reach Europe, then it is possible that we will be able to influence the world.” As the strength of the European Union increases, its impact around the world also expands. As we reach Europeans with the Gospel, we will touch other parts of the globe.
Statement of Faith:
- We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the infallible, and the authoritative Word of God.
- We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: the Father, Son, and Holy
Spirit. - We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His
miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in
His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal return to power and glory. - We believe that for the salvation of lost and sinful man, regeneration by the Holy Spirit is
absolutely essential. - We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled
to live a godly life. - We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved unto the
resurrection of life and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation. - We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in Christ.
History:
Greater Europe Mission has worked in Europe for more than 50 years. During that time, we have learned how to do effective ministry there and have adapted to meet changing needs.
In the early years, we concentrated on biblical education. A revival of spiritual interest followed World War II, and we helped train young people who had become Christians during this time. Our motto was, “The things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others” (2 Timothy 2:2, NIV).
Later, many of our missionaries focused on evangelism and church planting. Our motto for this work was “250,000 towns and villages in Europe without a Gospel witness,” and we settled in pioneer situations to plant evangelical churches where none existed.
Evangelistic meetings became a third emphasis of Greater Europe Mission when missionaries gifted in music and drama traveled around Europe, presenting the Gospel in churches, theaters, and the open air. Through these meetings, held in conjunction with local Christians, many Europeans began to follow Christ.
Short-term teams also developed. College students spent their summers doing outreach in Europe. North American churches began to send work teams for two weeks to help build and repair churches.
Increasingly, baby boomers are going to Europe to invest their life experience for Jesus. And some of our missionaries are now developing ministry internships, enabling students to receive academic credit for work in Europe. A motto of more recent years was “Equipping Europeans to reach Greater Europe for Christ.”
Our current vision is to see God expanding His Kingdom through all peoples of Europe to the world. This indicates our growing emphasis on discipleship, which is reflected in our Mission: “To disciple all peoples of Europe through rapidly reproducing churches.”
GEM founder Bob Evans always said that Europe would never be won to Christ through missionaries alone, but through cooperation with the Body of Christ there; and that is the principle we have followed through the years. However, because we have been available to God, He has brought to us a host of exciting ministries - of which you can be a part!
